Credit Score Rebuilding

Step-by-step guide

How to rebuild your credit score in South Africa.

Once your credit record has been cleared or corrected, rebuilding your credit score takes consistency. The aim is to create a steady pattern of responsible credit use, on-time payments and low credit utilisation.

01

Start with a clean credit report

Obtain your credit reports from TransUnion, Experian and XDS. Check that incorrect listings have been removed and that settled debts show as closed or paid.

02

Open one small credit product

Start with one manageable credit facility, such as a store account, small credit card or cellphone contract. Keep the limit low and avoid opening multiple accounts at the same time.

03

Pay everything on time

Payment history is one of the most important parts of your credit profile. Pay on or before the due date, use debit orders or reminders, and avoid missed payments.

04

Keep credit utilisation low

Try to use only 10% to 30% of your available credit limit. For example, on a R5,000 limit, this means using around R500 to R1,500 and paying balances regularly.

05

Avoid too many credit applications

Too many applications can affect your score because each application creates a credit enquiry. Space applications at least 2 to 3 months apart and avoid unnecessary credit requests.

06

Build a positive credit history over time

A small improvement may begin within 1 to 3 months. Noticeable recovery may take 3 to 6 months, with stronger rebuilding possible over 6 to 12 months if you remain consistent.

07

Safe ways to strengthen your credit profile

Where possible, add positive credit accounts responsibly. This may include a cellphone contract, a small personal loan managed correctly, or utility accounts where applicable in your name.

Keep older credit accounts open where appropriate
Request credit limit increases without increasing spending
Maintain a long-term account history
Monitor your credit score monthly
Dispute incorrect information immediately
Pay balances regularly, not only minimum payments

What to avoid

Avoid habits that can slow your recovery.

Payday loans
Multiple credit applications at once
Missing payments
Over-borrowing or maxing out credit
